Questions and Answers > Club Fitting > What shaft should I use with my driver? My ball speed is around 145 and my pro tells me my spin rate is too high. -Alex, FL

Check out my About section and profile page if you would like to find out more about me and what we do.  You are also welcome to submit your questions.

    Alex,

First off, you have a good ball speed!  145mph is about the average for the club pro to competitive amatuer.

Spin rate is usually the common problem with my fittings.  Players either spin it too low, or too high.  A big factor contributing to high spin is attack angle and loft of your current driver.  If you have too much loft, you have to hold the angle through impact, delofting the club, to produce good spin rates.  Sometimes that's a good thing, many pros have 10.5 degrees of loft.

I would say this, before you commit to a shaft, work with your pro to shallow your attack angle.  Essentially you want to hit a driver with an ascending blow.  Tee it up high, and feel a little tilt in your posture away from the target.  Once you improve your attack angle, check your new spin rate. If in fact you need reduced spin, my popular "spin-killing" shafts are the Graffaloy Blue and the Proforce V2.

We posted an article about driving here that may help you as well.
