Questions and Answers > Swing Theory > What tip could you give to someone to have consistent tempo throughout their swing and throughout the entire round.  -Scott

    Hey Scott,

From a practice standpoint, there are a few cool items you can buy like a simple metronome and match your swings to the sound.  There are a couple of Golf specific training aids I have that are very cool.  The Suunto Golf watch has a tempo ratio that is really cool if you want to measure precisely.  More info at www.suuntowatches.com.  If you want to see some actual research, John Novosel's Tour Tempo, www.tourtempo.com, is really, really cool.  His training aid, books, and CDs are cutting edge.

On the course, tempo is definitely affected by nerves, adrenaline, hydration, situations, and blood sugar.  If you feel yourself getting fast, working on walking slower, practice swinging slower, just everything...slower... is key.  Avoid the gatorades and bars and big meals, and instead eat small things like nuts and seeds throughout the round.  Having a good song you might like might help you keep your rhythm too.
