Mike,
Jon Stabler over at GolfPsych really made a difference one day when we told me that my pre-shot routine didn't have to be the same ritual everytime. What I had to do was get myself into a good state of mind every time.
What really works for me are small swings just to find the rhythm without any thought of mechanics. I might do one or three but I won't go until I've got the good rhythm.
The other thing I do is visualize the trajectory in the sky. I don't visualize the entire flight of the golf ball, but what I do is find a spot in the sky where I want my ball to fly to. It's just like hitting the backboard for a basketball shot, like focusing the corner of the box on the back board.
I'm shooting hoops on the course and that keeps me athleitc.
Hope that helps.
